Homebrew Competition

Homebrew Competition
August 24, 2013 / 5:00 p.m.

The Homebrew Competition at the 5th Annual Traverse City Summer Microbrew & Music Festival will feature local homebrewers and free samplings of their craft brews! This competition is intended to be fun, educational, and promote interest in the craft of homebrewing.

Craft beer is an art form and what better way to celebrate a craft beer fest than to recognize beer at its roots…homebrewing!  Bad Teacher and Porterhouse Productions are once again organizing the Homebrew Contest at this summer’s festival. The Traverse City Microbrew and Music Festival is the first ticketed event in the state allowed to hold this kind of contest. This is due to our great track record with our local police and MLCC.  Porterhouse has built a good relationship helping to expand craft beer programs.

Homebrew contestants need to be able to part with five gallons of kegged beer for the August contest…kegs returned of course. All brewers will brew a wheat recipe for the contest. Twenty-five percent of the grain bill must include a wheat grain.

For the “Judge’s Choice”, Homebrewers will be judged on aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel, and overall impression by professional Michigan brewers. Judges will fill out comment cards and homebrewers will receive feedback on their beer by the professionals.  A “People’s Choice” will be awarded to two brewers this year. Prizes this year include a chance to brew at The Filling Station and Brewery Ferment, seats on the TC Cycle Pub, and gift certificates to delicious local establishments!

Good luck!
